I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker managing an independent psychotherapy practice, and working as an Adjunct Professor and Field Liaison for the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work. In my practice, I serve a variety of clients (adolescents, adults, couples) struggling with depression, anxiety, grief & loss, trauma, and relationship difficulties. I am Level II EMDRIA trained in the use of EMDR (Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based treatment for trauma. Clients in my practice have found EMDR to be a powerful tool in relieving symptoms from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.
I am particularly passionate about helping women through the many challenges of pregnancy and childbirth. Having a baby is often one of the most significant experiences of a woman’s life. Expectations can be high, and many are unprepared for the related physical and emotional challenges. Perinatal Mood Disorder (including postpartum depression) is a very real, and treatable, mental health condition, requiring the assistance of a trained therapist such as myself.
In 1988, I cofounded the Denver chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) and discovered my passion for working with women and families healing from perinatal trauma. Studying with Doulas of North America (DONA) and The Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators (ALACE) enhanced my work as a doula (labor assistant) for women seeking vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC), and those seeking to avoid unnecessary medical intervention during childbirth. These profound experiences strengthened my respect for the deep emotional, spiritual, and psychological impact of the childbearing years, and inspired my career as a psychotherapist.
Understanding how past relationships, losses, and trauma impact the way we experience life and current relationships is crucial to healing and growth. I’ve incorporated this philosophy in my work with individuals, pregnant teens, birth families, adoptive couples, as well as with women and couples grieving infertility, miscarriage, abortion, and a multitude of other adverse life events. I continue to be inspired and honored to be invited along these powerful journeys.
